SEAL, INPUT
The water-facing lip on the prop shaft has a garter spring sitting in seawater. A carbon-steel spring rusts there. When you order by size, ask for FKM (brown, often sold as Viton). Those usually come with a stainless V2A spring. SKF marks that compound with a V, for example HMSA10 V. A V4A (316) spring is a special order from the seal house. Black NBR seals usually have a rusting steel spring. Some owners swap the steel spring for an O-ring. That's a field hack, common on a raw-water pump. On a saildrive prop shaft the lip needs the designed spring load. skipperpete on Cruisers Forum says keep the garter spring on that shaft. If you only have an NBR seal, reuse the stainless spring from a used oil-side OEM seal. Yanmar faces one lip at the oil and one at the water. Some owners reverse one or both so both lips keep water out. See Hacking Family on Ocelot and the Cruisers Forum SD20 water-in-drive thread. Brickwede's Freudenberg notes cover V2A versus V4A springs. If a spring then sits in seawater, it needs to be stainless.
