Volvo Penta MD27, MD29 & MD32 are Peugeot/Indenor XDP blocks — buy the Indenor part
The Volvo Penta MD27, MD29 and MD32 are marinized Peugeot/Indenor XDP 6-cylinder diesels. Internal parts cross to far cheaper Indenor/Peugeot numbers — with 113 confirmed cross-references.
The Volvo six that is really a Peugeot
Not every Volvo Penta is a Volvo design. The MD27, MD29 and MD32 six-cylinder diesels of the 1980s are marinized Peugeot/Indenor XDP 6/90 blocks — the "Indenor" being Peugeot's industrial-diesel division. All three share one Indenor XDP 6-cylinder parts book, and the marinizer's own catalogue names the base engine outright: "Basismotor: Volvo Penta MD27, MD29, MD32 … Peugeot Indenor X6M88AL/X6M90AL, DTP 92/106."
That matters because these engines were never in Volvo's modern online parts system, so genuine Volvo spares are scarce and expensive — while the Indenor/Peugeot internal parts are still available and far cheaper through classic-Peugeot and industrial-diesel channels.
| Volvo Penta model | Base engine | Cyl |
|---|---|---|
| MD27 | Peugeot/Indenor XDP 6/90 | 6 |
| MD29 | Peugeot/Indenor XDP 6/90 | 6 |
| MD32 / MD32A | Peugeot/Indenor XDP 6/90 | 6 |
(The related four-cylinder MD21A is the Indenor XDP 4/90 — the same diesel family as the Peugeot 504 — and shares its block with the Ford Lehman 4D61 and Vetus P4.21.)

How to buy the cheaper part
1. Find the Volvo Penta part number on your MD27/29/32. 2. Look up its Indenor equivalent here (or on the part page). 3. Source the Indenor/Peugeot number through classic-Peugeot 504/505 diesel and industrial-diesel suppliers — typically far cheaper than a scarce genuine-Volvo box, when one exists at all.
Cross-references are transcribed from a manufacturer-specialist catalogue and graded confirmed, but part numbers supersede and a few source entries carried typos (faithfully reproduced). Always verify against a supplier before ordering. See our Methodology.
This is an independent reference guide. Part numbers are compiled from public and third-party sources and may contain errors — always verify against an official source before ordering. See our Methodology. Browse all guides.
