Perkins 4.108, 4.154 and 4.236 marine versus industrial
Perkins marine 4.108M, 4.154M and 4.236M use Perkins industrial base engines with marine cooling. Buy internals on the industrial channel.
Perkins marinizes its own industrial engines
Perkins marinized its own industrial engines. Marine 4.108M uses industrial 4.108 as the base engine. Marine 4.154M uses 4.154. Marine 4.236M uses 4.236. Perkins adds a heat exchanger, raw-water pump and marine gearbox.
Internal service parts use the same type numbers. Agricultural and plant channels (Massey Ferguson, JCB, forklift) sell those numbers cheaper than a marine Perkins box.
Those industrial codes have their own engine pages here. The Perkins engine page is the industrial identity. The marine page points at the same block. Shop Perkins industrial numbers for 4.236M.
The M suffix
Perkins nomenclature: M means marine version of that engine type. 4.236M matches 4.236.
I've wired the 4.236 industrial book so it also shows on 4.236M. If you land on 4.236M and see no parts list, something's gone wrong on my side.
Confirmed blurbs here:
- 4.236M: marine 4.236. Tractor/plant 4.236 (MF 165/175/265 and JCB/forklift).
- 4.108M: marine 4.108.
- 4.154M: marine 4.154.
4.107 is the predecessor family to 4.108. If you order a gasket set, verify the suffix on the plate first.
Prima and Perama. Still Perkins, different packaging
Later marine packaging (Prima M90 / Range 4) still uses a 4.236-class block. Confirm 98.4×127 mm on the plate.
Volvo Penta MD22 marinizes a Perkins Prima (Rover O-series-derived) base engine. Volvo MD2010-2040 engines use Perkins 100-series / Shibaura Perama (M20/M30/M35) base engines. That story lives on the Volvo families page because the badge says Volvo.
Westerbeke W40A uses a Perkins 4-107 base engine. W52 uses a Perkins 4-135 (Mazda R2 / Toyo Kogyo casting). Those pages are Westerbeke pages with Perkins base engines.
What you still buy as marine
Heat exchanger, raw-water pump, wet exhaust, marine gearbox. Impellers follow the pump (impeller chart). Perkins OEM 460038 sits in Group B with Jabsco 1210-0001 on that chart. That pair is impeller interchange for the raw-water pump.
If you need an oil or fuel filter, use the Perkins industrial number from the engine or part page. Don't force Kubota HH164-32430 onto a 4.236M.
How to use the site
- Open the marine variant.
- Read the base-engine blurb.
- Then open the industrial 4.236 (or 4.108 / 4.154) savings and BOM when loaded.
- See How to use MarineDieselXRef.
I grade the M-suffix rule as confirmed because Perkins uses that naming. Prima plate-checks stay likely until bore and stroke agree.
FAQ
Is 4.236M a Kubota? 4.236M uses Perkins 4.236.
Can I use Massey Ferguson internal parts? That path is the industrial 4.236 channel in the blurb. Confirm the exact 4.236 suffix and any piston-height / liner differences with a Perkins source. If I haven't sourced an MF SKU, the cell is blank.
M30 on Volvo? Perkins Perama M30 is the industrial book behind some MD2030 installations. The badge says Volvo. The iron is Perkins-Shibaura.
