Universal Medalist marinizes Kubota industrial blocks

I've mapped Universal Diesel and M-series engines to a Kubota base engine. Order internal service parts as Kubota agricultural spares.

Universal uses a Kubota base engine

Universal (Medalist Universal, the Westerbeke sailboat-engine line) marinized Kubota industrial blocks for decades.

The M-series and 5400-series engines went into Catalina, Hunter, Sabre, and many other production sailboats. Those engines use a Kubota base engine.

That fact helps owners. Parts that look scarce under a discontinued Universal number are ordinary Kubota spares.

The one exception: the M4-30

The Universal M4-30 (and M4-30A) uses a Kubota Y-850 block. Kubota built that block only for Universal.

The Y-850 has no Kubota tractor cross-reference. Block-specific parts stay on the Universal / Y-850 channel.

Consumables such as filters and impellers still cross. This is the exception. Check the engine page before you treat it as a tractor base engine.

Consumables

Universal Kubota blocks share the Kubota filter family.

See the oil filter chart.

See the fuel filter chart.

See the impeller chart for raw-water pump parts.

Find parts for your Universal

  1. Open your model in the table above.
  2. Open the Industrial / tractor part equivalents view. That view lists parts for the Kubota block.
Universal used a wide range of Kubota blocks over 40 years. Some later variants changed block during production. If you order, confirm the Kubota number by engine serial with a dealer. I grade several mappings above likely. See Methodology.

Marine hardware you still buy as Universal

Heat exchanger, raw-water pump, and marine gearbox stay marine.

The M4-30 is the exception. Kubota built the Y-850 only for Universal. That block has no tractor book.

Pencil zincs on the exchanger are marine wear items with aftermarket crosses. Universal 11885 / 011885 crosses to Sierra 23-6400 and Tecnoseal TEC-E0. That pair is anode interchange for the exchanger.

See anodes.

How to confirm the block

  1. Treat a reused model name as a family, then read the table.
  2. M-25 uses D850. M-25XP uses D950.
  3. Use the table, then read the Kubota serial on the block.
  4. Filters follow the Z/D versus V split: small can HH150-32430 (WIX 51365), V-series HH164-32430 (WIX 51307).

FAQ

My Catalina has a Universal. Is it always Kubota?

In the M-series and 5400-series I list, yes, with the M4-30 caveat. Confirm on the plate.

How do I buy M4-30 internals?

The Y-850 was a Universal-only Kubota block. Consumables (filters, impeller) may still interchange. Block-specific parts stay on the Universal channel.
