Universal (Medalist) marine diesels are marinized Kubota blocks — buy the tractor part
Universal Diesel and M-series marine engines are marinized Kubota industrial blocks. Use the Universal-to-Kubota map to source internal service parts as cheaper Kubota agricultural spares.
Universal = Kubota
Universal (Medalist Universal / Westerbeke's sailboat-engine line) marinized Kubota industrial blocks for decades — the M-series and 5400-series engines fitted to Catalina, Hunter, Sabre and many other production sailboats are all Kubota underneath. That is very good news for owners: parts that are scarce or dear under a discontinued "Universal" number are ordinary Kubota spares.

The one exception — the M4-30
The Universal M4-30 (and M4-30A) uses a Kubota Y-850 block that was built only for Universal. It has no Kubota tractor cross-reference, so the usual "buy the ag part" saving does not apply to its block-specific parts (consumables like filters and impellers still cross). This is the exception that proves the rule — check the engine page before assuming a tractor donor.

Universal's Kubota blocks share the Kubota filter family: small-can oil filter Kubota HH150-32430 (WIX 51365) on the Z/D-series, larger HH164-32430 (WIX 51307) on the V-series, and fuel filter 15221-43170 (WIX 33390).
